We did it!!! With your incredible help, we achieved nation-leading transit funding and policy wins at the State Capitol tonight after years of persistent advocacy! The transportation bill passed by the Minnesota Legislature moments ago includes some of the most substantial gains for public transit, climate, and transportation justice in more than a decade—not just here in Minnesota, but across the country. Together they represent the transformative victory we’ve been working toward to protect our climate, connect our communities, and improve our daily lives. Now headed for the Governor’s signature, this monumental new legislation will expand and improve service for Minnesotans of all ages, races, incomes, and abilities. It is packed with critical investments and policy changes that Move Minnesota, our partners, and you fought for throughout the session and over the last several years, including:
- Long-term, dedicated transit funding to create the amazing system we need and deserve in the Twin Cities. Think fast and frequent service, electric buses, complete bus rapid transit network, new pedestrian and biking connections, and more.
- Cutting-edge policy to curb climate pollution from new transportation projects will require agencies to turn climate goals into action, lowering emissions and vehicle miles traveled.
- Transit ambassadors to create a safe and welcoming system for all.
- Decriminalized fare enforcement to end the astronomical fines and unjust criminal penalties disproportionately hurting Black and Native riders.
- A free fare pilot on two Metro Transit lines to better understand the impact free fares can have for community members and transit operations.
- Big funding for Northern Lights Express passenger rail connecting the Twin Cities and Duluth.
- Additional resources for Greater Minnesota transit to ensure that transit gains and accessibility are shared throughout the state.
- … And so much more, from an e-bike credit to active transportation funding to a new safety council…. This was a big session!
So many of you—bus riders, advocates, volunteers, donors, funders, coalition partners, and elected allies—fought alongside us to make these investments in public transit possible. Thank you—we made history together! Our work will create a better future for our families, climate, and communities. Our work will make it possible for more Minnesotans to thrive. This is a tremendous victory, and we are proud to have made it through this historic legislative session with you.
